Is remapping legal? Remaps & insurance
A plain-English guide from our Rayleigh workshop.
Is ECU remapping legal in the UK?
Yes. Remapping your engine or gearbox software is legal in the UK. What matters is that the vehicle stays roadworthy, keeps its emissions equipment, and that you tell your insurer.
Do I have to tell my insurer?
Yes. A remap is a modification, and you must declare it to your insurer. If you do not, your insurer may refuse a claim or cancel your policy. Some insurers may change your premium or terms, so check with yours before or straight after the work.
What about emissions equipment and the MOT?
The DPF, EGR and other emissions equipment must stay fitted and working. Removing a DPF is illegal, and the MOT checks for it. At Remapping Essex, DPF and EGR work is cleaning and diagnostics only. We never remove or disable emissions equipment.
Can I go back to standard?
Yes. We back up your original file before writing anything and keep it on record, so the vehicle can be returned to stock.
Is my vehicle suitable?
Every visit starts with a health check and fault scan. If something needs fixing first, we will tell you before any remap goes ahead. See our diagnostics service.
